Algoma-Manitoulin MPP, Michael Mantha, issued the following statement in response to the government’s announcement on the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation: “While I welcome the additional funding for the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), I am concerned about expanding eligibility to the entire District of Muskoka. A Good Idea is a Good Idea – No Matter Where it Comes From

You know, being a politician is kind of a funny thing. I am proud to say that I work hard to get out and meet people where they live and work year-round. As a result, I am often readily recognized. I’ve noticed that many people feel comfortable striking up an immediate conversation with me on the spot. Often, people are ...

Ford’s Ministers Just Got’a Dance

In recent years, there have been several popular TV shows that feature dancers who are trying to break into the entertainment industry. Some of them pair amateurs with famous celebrities. While I am not a fan of such programming, I admit that I have been known to draw a fair amount of attention at pow-wows occasionally. Judging from the smiles ...

Environmental Rights are Being Ignored in Favour of Quick Fixes

This week, Ontario’s Legislative Assembly will conclude its business for 2024. Despite the government choosing to keep the legislature in recess much longer than usual this year, there have been quite a few issues covered at Queen’s Park. Unfortunately, more than a few were caused by this government’s actions (or inactions in some cases). It can be almost dizzying trying ...

MPP Mantha Demands Improved Winter Maintenance for Northern Highways

Today during Question Period, Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Michael Mantha raised the need for better winter maintenance on Northern Ontario highways.   “Northern Ontario has been getting snow for the last three weeks and since the first snowfall we’ve experienced numerous, extensive closures on Highway 17 and Highway 11.” Said Mantha. “Clearing highways after a snowfall isn’t a matter of convenience for ...

Doug Ford is putting Northern Municipalities backs against the wall

Hockey is truly one of my passions. Hockey has long been and always will be Canada’s sport. With the whistling speed of the puck hurling toward the net and the flashing blades as the players rocket up and down the ice, what could be more exciting? I willingly admit to being loyal to a fault of a particular team that ...

MPP Mantha Introduces Bill to Return Accountability to Driver Examinations

Michael Mantha, MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin, has introduced legislation to end private, third-party contracts for driver examinations in Ontario. The Safer Driving Tests Act (Ending the Privatization Failure), 2024 will require that all driver examinations in Ontario are carried out by the Ministry of Transportation, and not third-party contractors.   “It’s become clear that operating driver examinations through a for-profit company ...

Ford’s fear of scrutiny is creating chaos

I regularly use this column to speak about the meat-and-potatoes issues that affect people in Algoma-Manitoulin. Issues like the healthcare crisis, the need for better highway and road maintenance in the North, our crowded school system, or the lack of affordable housing in our province are what I hear about most from people I meet with day-to-day and are top ...
