Letter to the Editor,
lnternational Women’s Day was last week. For years people have with or without dogs walked the trails around the old garbage dump. lt is close to town, sheltered and a piece of pure nature.
ln the winter, it is the snow dump with trucks and plows using the main road to dump loads of snow over the ridge. For the operators, we walkers are therefore a nuisance… Signs state to keep dogs on a leash, FINE! So, we use the trails off the main road and let our dogs run free.
But, when the big plows clear and widen the road constantly our entrances are buried. For years have I combated the problem by shovelling a foot wide opening to permit people with bad knees (old or new ones) to go through instead of crawling over the hills. This year with an over abundance of snow, extreme cold temperatures and blowing winds, my old body went on strike. Other like-minded walkers used skidoos and shovels for a while but also gave up.
Once a friend of mine made it over the snowbank onto the trail, when a snow plow went by and really blocked us in, regardless of our cars parked at the parking spot. What was the operator thinking!?
We elderly ladies had to slide crawl over the high snowbank to get out. My question is “Why so little kindness and inconsideration for others? Can we not share this place? Don’t you have a mother? Or perhaps a wife that deserves a bit of gallantry?”
I don’t ask for any special effort but when the loader goes in the road to push the snow over the ridge, “What does it take to push a bucket out of the entrances?”
lt just so happened that after a disappointing outing on the trails I went shopping and I was given a carnation from the cashier because it was international Women’s Day (what a nice touch, thank you, John). This little gesture brings me back to the guys on the snow plows…
Think about us women who are not as strong as you, but do so much for you, men. Be more considerate and more of a Cavaliere (editor’s note Cavaliere = Knight), than a brainless bully.
Sincerely,
Karin Grundt
