Ontario Northland is temporarily reducing its service for the Polar Bear Express passenger train following a discussion with community leaders. The train will operate two days per week on Mondays and Thursdays, effective March 26, until further notice. There will be no changes to departure and arrival times.
Freight service between Cochrane and Moosonee will continue as scheduled Tuesday and Friday, ensuring the transportation of essential supplies including food, medical supplies, building materials, fuel and equipment.
Ontario Northland made the decision in collaboration with the Mushkegowuk Council, Moose Cree First Nation and the Town of Moosonee, as a preventative measure in response to COVID-19. All parties have a heightened concern as remote communities are especially vulnerable to the threat of this virus.
Ontario Northland has put in place increased preventative measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. These include increased cleaning of the coaches, employee hygiene and wellness requirements, and limiting the capacity per coach so passengers can practice social distancing.
Passengers who choose to change their travel plans will be accommodated and can cancel or change their reservation at any time, provided they allow at least two hours before departure, during the months of March and April. Passengers who wish to receive full refunds will not incur any service charges.
