Motorist on James Bay Winter Road charged with drug offences

On Wednesday January 30, 2018 at approximately 3:45 a.m., members of the Moosonee Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped a motor vehicle on the James Bay Winter road between Moosonee and Fort Albany. During the investigation, small quantities of what are suspected to be cocaine, percocet and marihuana were seized.

As a result, Jody BIEDERMANN (32) of Moose Factory, Ontario was arrested and charged with the following offences:

•  Possession of a Schedule I Substance- Cocaine contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA);
• Possession of Schedule I Substance – Opioid, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA;
• Possession of a Schedule II Substance – Marijuana contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA; and with
• Fail to Comply with Officer in Charge Undertaking contrary section 145(5.1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Moosonee, Ontario on March 6, 2018.

On November 15, 2017 the Mushkegowuk Council declared a state of emergency on Illegal Drugs and Alcohol in the Mushkegowuk First Nation communities. As a result, police have increased their patrols along the James Bay Winter road which connects Moosonee to the communities of Fort Albany, Kashechewan and Attawapiskat. The increased patrols will continue throughout the winter road season and will focus on stopping illegal drugs from entering these communities.
