The Wawa Women’s Hockey Association’s annual hockey tournament has a new name. In honour of Lori Johnson’s dedication to the promotion of our local community and recreation, we renamed the tournament the “Annual Lori Johnson Memorial Hockey Tournament”. Lori enjoyed the game and the friendships made during her years as a player but continued to promote and devote her time to our annual tournaments in an organizational capacity upon retirement. She could always be found behind the scenes devoting countless hours on a busy tournament weekend. Her spirit will be with us this weekend.
November 17, 18 and 19th9 is shaping up to be a big weekend with games starting at 7 p.m . on Friday night. There are 8 women’s recreation teams participating. Teams from Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie, Chapleau and two local teams will compete for cash prizes. The tournament committee will host a dance fundraiser at the community center on Saturday evening, featuring Ritchie Overton with great dance music. The fun starts at 9 p.m. and the theme is “Decades in Time” and is an age of majority event.
The Community Center will be a busy place with the By-Hand Festival running the same weekend. A perfect weekend; hockey, shopping and dancing! Once again our local businesses have pitched in to make the draws and prizes very attractive. Local support like this is the main reason this Annual Tournament is always a success. The tournament schedule is posted on Wawa Recreation on Facebook so you can keep up and come out to cheer on the local teams.
