It was a foregone conclusion when I got up Friday morning. The wind was still blowing, gusting to 50km/h. The night before the wind had been recorded as gusting to 72km/h. With the wind blowing and gusting all day, and some funky clouds to the west – the recipe for a beautiful sunset was just a cooking away.
Sunset Kissed Waves = Water + Wind + Sunset
At 6:10 I headed to Government Dock to my favourite spot, the sunset was said to be 6:42. Government Dock is the perfect place. The wind barrelling down the bay, gathering up the waves to hit the beach, the rocks of Rock Island and the point between Long Beach and Rock Island. To the east then, you have the golden light of sunset shining on Rock Island and the waves smashing on the rocks. To the west, you have the other point, backlit by the setting sun.
In betwixt all of that… you have these glorious waves, spray torn off the waves by the wind, all backlit and glowing from the setting sun!
There were several other photographers, trying for their best shot – battling the setting sun, and trying to keep their feet dry. Every few minutes, I thought, “okay, this is it. Time to head home and warm the fingers in the defrost vent.” That damn sun, and clouds, and waves just got better! Sunset proper wasn’t the best, the glow in the funky skies as the sun bounced up after sunset was the best.
In about 1 hour I shot 1,123 frames, and three short videos. Here are 23 of my favourites. Enjoy!

Brenda, these images are absolutely stunning! Do you have these photos available for purchase? We have been going back to Wawa since 1982, and spend our vacation there each summer. I am always awestruck whenever we have the opportunity to witness the raw fury, and breathtaking beauty of Lake Superior throughout the seasons! Wawa is truly a unique place, and I am always disappointed when non-residents from down here in Southern Ontario…you know, the ones who believe there is no civilized human settlement beyond Barrie, make it their mission to discredit the North at every turn, without ever having taken the time to experience the land and its communities first hand.
Beautiful pictures from our little piece of paradise area
I shot 1080 frames during the day. Ran my battery down. Never done that before. 24Gb of data. Didn’t get back as I’d planned at sunset as the hills in town masked the extent of the cloud colour. Been fooled like that before.
Most beautiful pictures I enjoy taking sunset pictures but I can afford travelling to beautiful places
Sometimes one word can say it! WOW!!
