Filmmaker Bill Mason immortalized the children’s book Paddle to the Sea with his Canadian National Film Board film in 1966, and was nominated for Best Short Film for the 1968 Academy Awards.
The film is of a wooden canoeist, nicknamed “Paddle,” that had been carved and launched by a young boy in Nipigon, and its journey through the Great Lakes and down the St. Lawrence to the sea.
If you watch carefully you may recognize some of the locations, a staged forest fire at Meech Lake, Horseshoe Falls, and the polluted waters near Marathon.
Bill’s daughter, Becky, and her husband, Reid, are celebrating the 50th anniversary of this beloved, Oscar-nominated film’s debut. You will have the opportunity to hear stories of how it was shot, and of course, view the extraordinary film in its entirety.
Come to the Agawa Bay Amphitheatre, at the Agawa Bay Visitor’s Centre, film screening and special guests 9 – 10:15 p.m.
