Queen’s Park – MPP Michael Mantha (Algoma-Manitoulin) responded to the Ford government’s announcement of support for addictions services in Espanola and Sagamok First Nation. He released the following statement:
“Congratulations to community members who have been fighting for mental health investment for years. This isn’t all that’s needed, but it’s a small victory for mental health in these communities. It’s imperative that the province work with community partners to address the specific needs of the community to respond to the opioid epidemic in the region. It should not have taken the Ford government four years to provide some support for families and individuals struggling with mental health and addiction,” said Mantha.
Unfortunately, many have died from opioid overdoses in Algoma-Manitoulin. In 2020, Public Health Sudbury and Districts announced 106 deaths, 61 hospitalizations and 520 emergency department admissions due to an overdose.
“I have risen in the Legislature and written to the government many times on the urgent need for crisis supports and addiction treatment centres in northern communities and in First Nations. People across Algoma-Manitoulin deserve access to mental health and addictions services. We’ve waited long enough,” said Mantha.
