John 4:5-42.
Jesus was sitting at Jacob’s well that was just outside of the town of Sychar in Samaria. The well was deep and the water was pure, cool and refreshing to drink. The women of the town came every day in the evening to get water for the next day.
Jesus was there at noon time resting from his travels. He saw in the distance a woman walking towards him and wondered why she was coming at noon for water. As the woman walked by herself towards the well she may have been thinking of her life, She was probably mistreated as a child, had grown and looked for happiness in many ways and had been disappointed in the way her life had passed. She was now with a man who mistreated her.
She longed to have the happiness in her life that the other women in the town had, she longed for their friendship. She would have enjoyed their companionship, but because of her lifestyle she was rejected. So it was at noon she went for water. As she got closer to the well she saw a man sitting there watching her approach; would she be safe was her thought as she got nearer.
When she got to the well Jesus asked her for a drink. This was odd, Jews and Samaritans never spoke to each other. The Samaritans were half-bred Jews; Jewish people who had intermarried with the people of that particular country. Jesus treated her kindly and talked to her kindly and said that He could fill the thirst of her spirit with the word of God. He knew of her life and problems but still, he cared for her.
She realized that He was the Messiah, and asked Him if he was, He said yes and she ran to the town to spread the news that Jesus was there and was teaching and healing. That day they all recognized Jesus for who He was. The Saviour.
