“It is wonderful to see the growing recognition and support that Canadians are exhibiting in celebrating International Women’s Day. New Democrats have long recognized the obstacles and in some cases barriers, that women here in Ontario and around the world have overcome and continue to tear down. This year, we are recognizing and celebrating the fact that women lead change.
Today gives us an opportunity to focus on how far we have come and survey how far we still have to go in order to build a better future for every woman and girl in Ontario. Here in Algoma-Manitoulin we have many strong women and girls who we see leading the way. Over the years, we have had many nominees recognized through the Leading Women, Leading Girls Building Communities Program. This speaks to the strength and confidence that many women throughout the riding demonstrate. Nonetheless, there still much work to be done. Our mothers, sisters and daughters should be able to look to a future in which they can feel safe walking the streets of their community without fear of harassment or violence, regardless of the colour of their skin, their sexual orientation, their gender expression or what they are wearing.
We call on all Canadians to help build a world in which women and girls have the ability to get out of a violent situation as well as access to the resources and support they need. We must work together to create workplaces in which women are not subject to gender wage gaps and where systemic barriers that disproportionately impact women who are Indigenous, Black, racialized, queer and trans or recent immigrants are dismantled.
By working together, we can ensure women and girls here in Ontario and around the world can look forward to a safer, brighter and prosperous future.
Happy International Women’s Day.”
