News Tidbits – Community is Family – participates in Sunday evening’s Family Skate were asked to wear hockey jerseys in remembrance and support for the Humboldt Broncos. The Wawa Minor Hockey Association askes that everyone wear their favourite hockey jersey to school or work to show their support. Dennis Koostachin and Patsy Iahtail are walking 270 kilometres to bring attention to the need to establish additional services, such as a detox centre in the Mushkegowuk region. In November 2017, the Mushkegowuk Council of Chiefs declared a state of emergency, while working on a regional campaign against illegal drugs and alcohol.

Amara Ruffo a 14-year-old Chapleau Cree First Nation teen threw the first pitch at the Blue Jays game against the Chicago White Sox. Amara is in the Jays Care Foundation’s Girls at Bat program, which encourages leadership and works on suicide prevention in nine James Bay communities.
