Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas is relieved the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has finally released its report into the March 2015 train derailment outside Gogama.
The report faults Canadian National Railways Co. (CN) for an improperly repaired rail that caused a 94-oil-car CN train to derail and spill 2.6 million litres of oil that leaked into the Makami River as it burned for three days. “The people of Gogama and Mattagami First Nation need answers, this report could help. It acknowledges that speed and maintenance were behind this disaster ” said Gélinas. “I hope the people of Gogama and Mattagami First Nation can use this report to bring attention to the environmental mess in their community and their water ways.”
Gogama residents still feel the provincial government has not done enough to hold CN accountable for remediating the accident site two and a half years after the event.
