• Today is the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York city. Canadians remember the great hospitality that they extended without hesitation as the US and then Canada closed airspace and grounded all aircraft. Canada hosted between 224 and 255 diverted aircraft at 17 airports during Operation Yellow Ribbon on September 11, 2001. More than 33,000 passengers and crew were accommodated by communities in the Yukon, New Brunswick, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, the Northwest Territories, British Columbia and Quebec. Most notably, the small town of Gander, Newfoundland hosted 38 aircraft and nearly 6,600 stranded people. Gander had a population of 9,651 in 2001.
