Letter to Mayor & Council

October 30, 2026

Mayor and Council
Municipality of Wawa

I was at the Michipicoten Memorial Community Centre yesterday picking up cigarette butts at the entrance to make the area more presentable.  On Thanksgiving, I picked up a different bag of butts and “presented” the same to Maury O’Neill with a note to please put out a container for the litterbugs (smokers) to deposit their waste.

As of yesterday, no container.

Remembrance Day will be upon us very soon, and the mess we picked up is very disrespectful.  What does one have to do get some positive action instead of being ignored?

If smokers want to ruin their health, that is their choice, it is a free country, but please don’t allow them to mess up the environment for the rest of us.

An interesting fact we discovered:  95% of the butts we picked up were cigarettes purchased at the Reserve.

We have a beautiful Community Centre and Cenotaph, why do we have to see this disgraceful garbage.

Note:  Tossing cigarette butts is still LITTERING!

Sincerely,

Karin Grundt, Wawa
