Peacefully passed away with Saara by his side at the Lady Dunn Health Centre on Thursday, February 25, 2021, at the age of 87 years.
He was the beloved son of the late Julia and Herman Schreiber. John will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his special friend Saara Mickusz. He was loved and cherished by his children Audrey Crack of Sault Ste. Marie, Dorothy Schreiber of Edmonton, Pamela Schreiber (Daryl Rak) of Whitby, Allan Schreiber of Mexico, Sandra Schreiber of Sault Ste. Marie and the late Neil Schreiber. Proud grandfather of Neal (Melanie) of Sault Ste. Marie, Erin (Massimo) of Italy, Jennifer Russell of Sault Ste. Marie and great grandfather of Fiamma. Dear brother of Ruth Hirschfeld (Frank, late Kevin) of Garson and the late Peter Schreiber. John will be lovingly remembered by Saara’s children Leah LePage (Shawn) of Hanmer and Bonnie Torrance (Andrew) of Sault Ste. Marie and grandchildren Hayden (Maria), Tyrus, Cally (Dan) and Katherine. He will also be remembered by his many nieces, nephews, friends and co-workers at the MNR District/Regional Offices.
John Schreiber was a formidable forest firefighter, a seasoned trapper, an outfitter, and a log home builder. John was most at home when he was in the bush. If bush were a language, he would have been among its most eloquent speakers. His spirit is soaring with the osprey, dancing in the northern lights, and rustling through the poplar leaves.
Please leave a sympathy message to the family on the memorial page of John Schreiber to pay them a last tribute. You may also light a candle in honor of John Schreiber.
Due to Covid-19, a private family funeral service will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Spring interment will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery, Hawk Junction.
Memorial donations made to the Lady Dunn Health Centre Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
The family would like to thank Dr. Chris Stamler and the nurses at the Lady Dunn Health Centre for their exceptional care of John. As well, the family would like to thank Jolene Binda, Christie Reid, Rochelle Parsons and Emily Piraino for their guidance and assistance given to Saara. Lastly, a special thank you to Connie and Randy Voltaire for the compassion and care given to John and Saara.
Arrangements entrusted to the Kerry Funeral Home Ltd., Wawa.

RIP John. My condolences to Saara and all the family. I worked for John at MNR.
Deepest condolences to John’s family and friends.
Many many years of experience and knowledge came from this man. Working at Fire Control, Air Dales bush camps, trapping…you name it he was doing it.
I am proud to say I worked under all of John’s guidance and knowledge. He is a legend of his own.
The many years we worked together at the MNR District Office this guy was very organized and scheduled, he would make an early appearance at the Air Dale dock , then over to the District Office at opening to set everyone going for the day, out to the warehouse to check stock, then out in the field, back to check in a couple of times a day till closing hours of the office, then a chin wag with me in the Radio Room till 7 pm, once all aircraft were back in and docked, he would go home, some nights 9-10 o’clock. He wasn’t happy unless he was working and he was the most respected man at the Ministry, we all loved to be part of his life.
Rest in Peace John, you certainly deserve some rest now.
I am forever thankful to John, who in my early teens,as a friend to Allan, was fortunate to accompany John and Allan to open his outfitter camps in the spring, and close them before winter. It was work, but it was fun work as it more of an adventure. We would get the work for the day done and were then free to explore. To fish or just cruise in the canoe. I remember John paddling the canoe as we came upon a moose swimming, he was careful to remain at a distance to not frighten the moose yet allow us a pretty good view. Respect for nature. The highlight of these trips was of course, we went on a plane! A great adventure for a twelve or thirteen year old that year year old boy. My condolences to the family and especially Allan, see ya buddy, hope you see this. Rest in peace John.
Our deepest condolences to your family. He was a wonderful and giving man. May he rest in peace
I worked with John Schreiber at the MNR as a summer job student. I remember his intensity in his work ethic and the understanding the concepts of the tasks to be done. In retrospect of that summer was learning but also fun times. With John’s encouragement I worked on the wall facing the Wawa Lake in front of the MNR office at the time albeit reluctantly, for me it became a legacy. The fire fighting technics under John’s tutelage was intense and detailed, like packing parachutes to drop equipment from a shaky Beaver and hoping it would open. The firefighting training was something I never forgot, repairing hoses, erecting a hose drying rack and delivering equipment to lookout towers in the shaky Beavers. In retrospect I owe John a thank you for that great summer of a learning and experience. I did not know that John was a experienced outdoorsman, an opportunity missed. Rest in Peace Mr. Schreiber
My condolences to John’s family and friends. It has been many years since I was in their home but I will always remember hanging out with Pam and Sandra and how thoughtful, kind yet strict and firm their Dad was. He would occasionally come sit with us and spoke about his work and his time in the bush. I always wished I could have worked with him to soak up his learned and innate knowledge of the natural world.
Rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing for you.
Sara and Family: Have some wonderful memories of John when he worked for MNR with our Dad Leo, Neil Huff and Alf Bull. A humble man always kind and ready to give a hand and share his wisdom. He left an impact on many lives!
We want to send our deepest condolences to all of John’s family and Saara in the recent passing of John. He will be missed. RIP as you have earned it.
Our most sincere condolences to John’s family and Saara. We have such fond memories of John and enjoyed his visits when he would drop by to check to see how the building of our log home was coming along. Always quick to share his knowledge and offer suggestions that were much appreciated. He was a kind and generous man. We will forever be grateful for his friendship. Rest in Peace Mr. Schreiber, you have earned your rest.
John Morrison recalls the times when Don Massey would bring John Schreiber in for dinner mid-week during a fly-in fishing expedition, and John would entertain everyone enjoying the camp food. He was instrumental in helping the Sprengs, Morrisons and Jennings in building their bush camp on Stranded Lake. Lots of memories, wonderful ones. Our sincere sympathy to his family in their loss.
