Operations have been suspended at Wesdome’s Kiena Complex in Val D’or, Quebec after the death of a mining contractor. Roméo Girard, 53 of Malartic has been identified as the mining contractor who was fatally injured on September 9th. Reports are that the worker was found beside his truck (which had struck a wall), seriously wounded and unconscious underground. He was taken to hospital where he sucumbed to his injuries.
Wesdome’s press release stated, “Personnel responded urgently however efforts to revive the individual were unsuccessful. Police and the provincial safety authorities CNESST were immediately notified and called to the site. All activities underground at Kiena are suspended while the Company works with the authorities to determine the cause of death.”

Wesdome is fully cooperating with the investigation, and providing support to families and employees at site during this difficult time.’
The Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST) is investigating with the Sûreté du Québec.
