THOMAS, Julia Sophia

Julia, a long-time resident of Wawa and Sault Ste Marie, passed away Tuesday, September 13th, 2016, at the Ontario Finnish Rest Home.

Born in 1924, in Sioux Lookout, Ontario; Julia met her late husband, Joseph Edward in Winnipeg, Manitoba after WWII and moved to Portage La Prairie, Manitoba where their eldest daughter, Marilyn (late Garfy) was born. They moved to Wawa, where they had three more children, Joanne (Paul), Laurie, and the late John. There, Julia ran a restaurant which was later reconstructed into a laundromat (Editor’s Note: Julie’s Laundromat on Broadway Avenue across from the Municipal Offices) until Joe retired from Algoma Ore and they moved to the Sault. Julia’s passion was her family and she loved to cook for everyone. Her enjoyment was gardening. She could bring any plant back from the dead and have them grow and flourish. She had a joyful laugh, a contagious smile, and a mischievous grin.

She is survived by her daughters Marilyn, Joanne, and Laurie, grandchildren Doris (Bruce), Victoria (Len), Tammy (Chris), Debbie (Brian), Tom, Rhawnie, and Rianne (Adrian). Great-grandchildren Jason, Jessica, Kendra, Mike, Macey, Ehmber, Sophia, Trysten, late Kylie, Taylor, Julia, and Lily; step-great-grandchildren Isabelle and Olivia. Predeceased by her parents John and Edith Lacelle. Sister of Laura Bjarnason (late Bob) and Eileen Smith (Barry).

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in her memory. At Julia’s request cremation has taken place.

A private family memorial will take place at a later date.
