This afternoon Wawa’s Tim Hortons presented a “Smile Cookie Cheque” for $2,200 to the Wawa Food Bank. This is an annual campaign run by Tim Hortons, with each local franchise deciding on the charity to benefit. The cookies were sold for only one week, from September 21st to September 27th. A smile cookie sold for $1. In Wawa, 2,100 cookies were sold, with $100 being donated in cash. Norma and Perry gave the credit to their staff who promoted the sale of the cookies throughout that week.
Cindy Szekely of the Wawa Food Bank exclaimed at the number, “$2,200, that’s like insane, last year it was 1500. People are just understanding that there are a lot of hurting people out there!” Cindy explained that last week they had 70 clients at the Wawa Food Bank last year, an increase of 20-30 weekly clients. She also noted that a lot more families are using their service. The shelves are always stuffed full on Wednesday, but are usually bare by afternoon’s end due to the increased clientele.
