On September 7, 2017 at approximately 5:50 p.m. members of the Marathon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision (MVC) at the junction of Peninsula Road (Highway 626) and Highway 17, Marathon Township.
A tractor trailer (TT) was traveling eastbound on Highway 17 passing two other TT’s that were also eastbound in the turning lane to turn onto Peninsula Road. A Jeep Cherokee SUV pulled out from Peninsula Road in front of the eastbound TT that was passing the other two turning TT’s. The SUV was struck broadside pushing the vehicle to rest in the westbound ditch of Highway 17.
Emergency services including the Marathon Fire Department (MFD) and Superior North Emergency Medical Services (EMS) attended the scene to assist.
The driver and single occupant of the TT sustained no injuries. The driver of the SUV and single occupant, Natalie GRAVELLE, a 42 year old female of Marathon, ON was transported to a local hospital by EMS where she was pronounced dead.
The highway was closed for approximately 1 hour then open to one lane for approximately 8 hours while OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation unit (TTCI) conduct their investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
