On May 20, 2017, at approximately 6:20pm EST, officers of the Nipigon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a male who was fatally injured in an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) collision which occurred on a bush road located east of the Little Sturge Lake, Unorganized Township, off of Black Sturgeon Rd.
The driver of the ATV was traveling on the bush road when he encountered another motor vehicle on a corner. The ATV then lost control causing the ATV to leave the roadway and roll, fatally injuring the driver.
Officers, along with Superior North Emergency Medical Services (EMS), attended the location of the driver, where he was found to be unresponsive. EMS then transported the male to the Nipigon Memorial Hospital.
The 33 year old male from Marathon, Ontario was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
An OPP Technical Collision Investigator (TCI) with the assistance of Nipigon detachment members attended the scene and the investigation is ongoing. There is no evidence of impairment and the driver was wearing the required safety equipment for the operation of an ATV.
