East Algoma OPP – Charges laid after dog sucumbs to injuries after being shot

The East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating an animal cruelty complaint after a dog was shot and later succumbed to its injuries in Thessalon First Nation.

On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at approximately 12:30 p.m., members of the East Algoma OPP and the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) responded to an animal cruelty complaint on Sago Street in the community of Thessalon First Nation.

The investigation determined that the dog had been let outside its residence at approximately 7:00 a.m. earlier that morning. When the animal did not return home, the owner began searching for it. A short time later, the dog, described as a German Shepherd-Husky mix, was located severely injured and unable to move in a yard near its home.

The dog was immediately transported to a veterinary clinic in Desbarats for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of veterinary staff, the dog later succumbed to its injuries. The investigation has determined that the injuries were consistent with the dog having been shot.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident and are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone who may have information, surveillance footage, or dash camera video related to this incident is urged to contact the East Algoma OPP.
