A disturbance at a Wawa hotel has resulted in two individuals being arrested on weapons and drug charges.
On March 31, 2026, at approximately 9:30 a.m., the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Algoma Paramedic Services responded to a report of an Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) incident at a local hotel. One individual was arrested for assault. During a search incident to arrest, officers located suspected controlled substances.
A search warrant was subsequently executed on the hotel room involved in the incident. As a result of the search, officers seized three illegal handguns and ammunition, Canadian currency, a vacuum sealer, digital scales, and quantities of suspected controlled substances.
The seized substances are believed to include approximately 1.2 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine, approximately 450 grams of suspected cocaine, approximately 100 grams of suspected fentanyl, and a quantity of suspected hydromorphone. The estimated street value of the suspected drugs is approximately $142,000.
As a result of the investigation, a 32‑year‑old individual from Sault Ste. Marie has been charged with:
- Breach of firearms regulation – store firearm or restricted weapon
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm
- Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order – 12 counts
- Possession of counterfeit money
- Assault
- Assault – spousal
- Overcome resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle
- Resist peace officer
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – fentanyl
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – methamphetamine
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – hydromorphone
A second individual, aged 21, from the Sault Ste. Marie area has been charged with:
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Breach of firearms regulation – store firearm or restricted weapon
- Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition
- Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order (two counts)
- Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine
Both accused were held for bail hearings before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie and were remanded into custody.
Due to the intimate partner violence nature of this investigation, the OPP will not be releasing the names of the accused.
