With summer travel about to begin, the Sault Ste. Marie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind motorists that a reduced speed zone is in effect until October 26, 2017.
Highway 17 from 2.3 km south of Highway 552 northerly for 29.9 kilometres to the Chippewa River Bridge is a designated construction zone with reduced speed limits in effect.
There are 2 sets of traffic lights. One is at the Old Mill Bay Hardwood Bridge and Goulais River Bridge. The speeds are reduced approaching the lights from both north and south directions. It is reduced from 90 to 70 to 60 km/hour approaching each set of traffic lights.
OPP remind motorists that fines are now doubled for speeding in a construction zone when workers are present and it is also an offence to disobey STOP or SLOW signs displayed by a traffic-control person.
Drive defensively and expect the unexpected. Don’t tailgate, sudden stops are common in construction zones. Pay attention at all times and watch for workers, new signs, traffic signals, pavement markings or uneven pavement. Drive the posted reduced speed limit and keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
