NDP Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Critic Michael Mantha issued the following statement in response to Premier Wynne’s recent commitment to clean up mercury contamination in the English-Wabigoon River.
“The Ontario New Democratic caucus welcomes the explicit commitment by the government to the full clean-up of the Wabigoon-English River of the 50-year-old mercury contamination there, as well as the commitment to ‘identify all potentially contaminated sites.’
The people of the Grassy Narrows and Wabaseemoong First Nations have been devastated by the contamination, and have waited far too long for this government to act.
The NDP caucus will be watching closely to ensure there’s follow through on these commitments, and my colleagues and I will continue to press the Liberal government on this promise until ‘the fish are safe to eat’.”
