East Algoma OPP – Increased Traffic Enforcement throughout Labour Day Weekend

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be increasing traffic enforcement throughout the Labour Day long weekend as part of its ongoing commitment to keeping motorists, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians safe on our roadways.

With more people travelling to visit family, attend events, and enjoy the final long weekend of summer, officers will be actively patrolling highways and community roads with a focus on the “Big Four” contributing factors in serious collisions and fatalities:

1. Impaired driving (alcohol and/or drugs)
2. Aggressive driving, including speeding
3. Distracted driving
4. Failure to wear a seatbelt

These dangerous driving behaviours continue to be among the leading causes of preventable collisions resulting in serious injury and death across Ontario. Motorists are reminded that every decision made behind the wheel has consequences and that safe driving starts before the vehicle even leaves the driveway.

“The Labour Day long weekend is a time for families and friends to gather and enjoy the last days of summer, but it is also one of the busiest travel periods of the year,” says Acting Staff Sergeant André Chenier of the East Algoma OPP. “We are asking drivers to slow down, stay focused, drive sober, and ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained. Our goal is simple: that everyone gets to their destination safely and returns home safely.”

Officers will also be conducting RIDE programs, monitoring traffic complaints, and taking enforcement action where necessary to address unsafe driving behaviours.

The OPP encourages members of the public to report suspected impaired, aggressive, or dangerous drivers by calling 9-1-1 when it is safe to do so and an immediate threat exists.

This Labour Day weekend, make road safety a priority. One good decision can save a life.
