East Algoma OPP – Pickup Driver charged following serious collision

On Sunday, August 9, 2026, at approximately 9:30 a.m., members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 17 and Highway 108 in the Township of the North Shore.

The investigation determined that a blue pickup truck travelling eastbound on Highway 17 was in the left-turn lane attempting to turn north onto Highway 108 when it collided with a grey car travelling westbound on Highway 17.

Two passengers sustained serious injuries. They were transported by ambulance to hospital in Elliot Lake and were later airlifted to a hospital in Sudbury by Ornge air ambulance.

As a result of the investigation, the 66-year-old driver of the pickup truck, from Blind River, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with:

• Careless driving causing bodily harm
• Left turn-fail to afford reasonable opportunity to avoid collision
• Turn-not in safety

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice (Provincial Offence Court) in Blind River on September 15, 2026.
