The Ministry of Natural Resources – Chapleau Wawa District is advising area residents that a Flood Watch is in effect in the District until Friday, May 08, 2026 at 4:00pm.
Residents in the Chapleau, Wawa, Foleyet, White River, Hawk Junction, Missanabie,
Dubreuilville, Manitouwadge, Sultan, Nemegos, Biscotasing and area should keep a close
watch on local conditions and exercise caution around lakes, rivers, creeks and streams.
The spring melt is underway and local waterways are rising rapidly. Low lying areas may
be prone to flooding.
The ministry is currently monitoring levels and flows of area waterways and undertaking
active dam operations (where applicable) to attenuate flooding impacts to the extent
possible. Road closures are also possible.
The ministry is closely monitoring the weather and developing watershed conditions.
Further updates will be issued as appropriate.
Description of Weather System
Over the next few weeks, temperatures are forecast to be mild across the region with
daytime temperatures slightly above freezing and nighttime temperatures slightly below
freezing on average. Periods of rain and snow are forecast over the coming days;
however, no significant accumulation is anticipated.
Description of Current Conditions
Lakes and rivers are still largely frozen in the district though ice and shoreline conditions
are deteriorating with the warmer temperatures. Water in the snowpack is considered high.
Frozen ground conditions will limit soil infiltration; as a result, rainfall and any additional
snowmelt in the coming days may generate significant surface runoff. Nuisance pooling of
melt and rainfall on roadways may occur in flood prone and low-lying areas.
Close monitoring of local forecasts, special weather statements, and warnings is
recommended.
This message remains in effect until Friday, May 08 at 4:00pm, or until it’s updated.
