First Nations representatives of the Robinson-Huron Treaty (1850) have brought a lawsuit against Canada and Ontario citing their failure to implement the terms of the treaty. The hearing centres on the annuity augmentation. The treaty when signed promised an initial payment of $2 per individual, which would be increased based on the wealth generated by the land and resources. The last increase was in 1874, with the payment incrased to $4 – there has been no increases since.
Chief Dean Sayers of the Batchewana First Nation, Chief Duke Peltier of Wikwemikong Unceded Reserve, and Perry Bellegarde, national Chief of the Assembly of First Nations are representing the communities of the Robinson-Huron Treaty.
Court began yesterday morning, and will be held in Thunder Bay, Manitoulin Island, Garden River and Sudbury.
