For the past few years, École secondaire Saint-Joseph (Wawa) has offered the course “French: Discovering the Contemporary Voices of First Nations, Métis and Inuit” (Grade 11). Taught by Ms. Carole Bouffard, this course allows students to deepen their knowledge of the themes and stylistic elements of various cultural expression forms, by studying various texts by First Nations, Métis and Inuit authors.
In this course, students studied Aboriginal authors from various time periods. Topics included identity, relationships, self-determination, sovereignty and self-government. This year, students discovered a variety of poems and songs by Indigenous artists including Natasha Kanapé Fontaine (N’entre pas dans mon âme avec tes chaussures), Joséphine Bacon (Bâtons à message/ Tshissinuatshitakana) and Samian (La plume d ‘aigle).
Students were also able to experience great learning activities, including the making of a pair of moccasins and a traditional bracelet.
