On Sunday August 19, 2018 at approximately 10:19 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Superior East (Wawa) Detachment, responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 approximately 15 kilometres south of Wawa in Lendrum Township, Ontario.
Preliminary investigation has revealed that a southbound vehicle struck a moose then crossed into the northbound lane colliding with a northbound vehicle. The northbound vehicle carried five familial occupants, all of which were transported to hospital with serious injuries. Two of the five occupants have since passed away. Two occupants in the southbound vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene, while the other two occupants were also transported to hospital with serious injuries.
The deceased occupants of the southbound vehicle have been identified as Fatos METKO (45) and Fioralb METKO (14) both of Calgary, Alberta. The deceased occupants of the northbound vehicle have been identified as Cynthia CARAOA (51) and Anika CARAOA (9) both of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
This investigation remains ongoing under the direction of Detective Inspector Rob Hagerman of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) of the OPP. Assisting with the investigation are members of the OPP’s Superior East and Sault Ste. Marie Detachment Crime Units along with the OPP’s Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) Team. Algoma Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Wawa Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.

Two occupants in the southbound vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene, while the other two occupants were transported to the hospital by Algoma Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Also assisting at the scene, were members of the Wawa Volunteer Fire Department.
At this time, the names of the deceased are being withheld pending next of kin notifications. The investigation remains ongoing with the assistance of OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI).

On Sunday, August 19, 2018, at approximately 10:19 p.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East (Wawa) Detachment responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision located on Highway 17 approximately 15 kilometres south of Wawa in Lendrum Township, District of Algoma.
The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) are assisting with this investigation.
Highway 17 remains closed in both directions.

Highway 17 is closed just north of Line Lake due to a serious collision that happened about 10:30 p.m. Superior East Opp, Wawa Fire Department and Algoma EMS (Wawa, White River, Dubreuilville) all attended the collision site. Wawa Fire was required to extinguish a fire.
Wawa-news could see two vehicles involved in the collision on the east side of the highway and a dead moose on the other shoulder. One ambulance was observed leaving for Sault Ste. Marie, and there have been several trips ferrying patients to Lady Dunn Health Centre.
The highway remains closed at this time, with no idea of when it will reopen.
