Snowmobilers take caution – Ice conditions can change rapidly

As the 2017 Snowmobile season winds down, the North East Region Snowmobile, All Terrain Vehicle, Vessel Enforcement (SAVE) team wish to remind snowmobilers that ice conditions are changing rapidly and could present a significant risk. Operators are encouraged to avoid crossing waterways as ice conditions are unpredictable.

 

In addition, before planning a trip check trail conditions and ensure your intended route is indicated as being open. Private landowners often close gates and become active on their property when the clubs post trails as closed. Respectful consideration of private property is important if the trail network is to be sustained. As the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) begins to indicate trails as unavailable, snowmobilers are encouraged to refer to the interactive trail guide and to travel on those trails that are limited or available. OFSC trail permits are still required on prescribed trails.

 

Warm weather in the late season can pose a problem for snow machines as they become susceptible to overheating which can lead to a mechanical failure and an unintended stay in the bush. Be prepared and ensure someone is aware of your route and expected time of return. When planning fuel stops be sure to consider late season trail closures. Carry extra fuel when possible.
