Celebrated Indigenous singer-songwriters Susan Aglukark and William Prince take the stage in Sault Ste. Marie this weekend as the 54th Algoma Fall Festival presents an exciting celebration of Indigenous music, dance, storytelling and visual arts.
The weekend also features four free, family-friendly performances of Blue Winds Red Eyes, combining hoop and contemporary dance, music and storytelling inspired by the teachings of the Medicine Wheel.
These performances are part of Maada’ookiidaa – Let’s Share Our Gifts, the Festival’s Indigenous programming initiative, guided by its Indigenous Advisory Group. The initiative also features Shirley: An Indian Residential School Story, currently on exhibition at the Art Gallery of Algoma, and an October 23 concert featuring Terra Lightfoot with Indigenous singer-songwriter Logan Staats.
“Our northern community is home to incredibly talented artists with unique and important perspectives, stories and work. We are proud to enrich our community by bringing people together to experience excellence in the arts by presenting Maada’ookiidaa – Let’s Share Our Gifts, our programming guided by our Indigenous Advisory Group that celebrates Indigenous artists, voices and stories.
Maada’ookiidaa creates space for truth-telling, listening and learning, and encourages all of us to better understand our collective responsibility to walk the path toward truth, reconciliation and healing. It is an important part of how our Festival continues to bring people together through the arts.” explained Heather Lang, President, Algoma Arts Festival Association.
