East Algoma OPP – Traffic Complaint Leads to Impaired Driving Charges

The East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint involving a vehicle that had been reported earlier in Sault Ste. Marie area.

On Saturday, September 12, 2026, police received a second complaint regarding the same vehicle travelling eastbound on Highway 17 near Iron Bridge. The caller advised that the vehicle was failing to remain within its marked lane.

Officers subsequently located the vehicle a short time later Highway 17 in Mississauga First Nation.

During the interaction, police observed signs consistent with impairment by alcohol. The driver was arrested and transported to the Blind River OPP detachment for further testing.

Stephen CUSSEN, 64 years old from Sooke, British Columbia was charged with:

• Operation while impaired – alcohol
• Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
• Dangerous operation

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on November 5, 2026.

The driver was also issued a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
