A Fresh Start: Helping Children Feel Ready for the New School Year

As students across Algoma head back to the classroom, Algoma Family Services shares simple ways parents and caregivers can help children navigate the transition.

For many children, the return to school means seeing friends, meeting a new teacher and settling into a familiar routine. For others, it can mean a mix of excitement, uncertainty and worry.

“A new classroom, a new school or simply the end of summer can be a big adjustment,” said Ali Juma, CEO of Algoma Family Services. “How families approach those first few weeks can make a meaningful difference is easing a child’s transition.”

Parents can help by:

  • Creating Predictable Routines Consistent sleep, meal, and homework schedules help reduce stress and build a sense of security.
  • Talking About FeelingsEncourage open conversations. Let your child know it’s okay to feel nervous and that you’re there to help.
  • Familiarize Them with School – If possible, visit the school, meet the teacher, and walk through their daily routine.
  • Stay Calm and PositiveChildren take emotional cues from adults. Your calm confidence can help ease their worries.
  • Support Social Connections – Help your child reconnect with friends or join group activities to build a sense of belonging.

Parents should also watch for signs that a child may be having a harder time adjusting, including frequent headaches or stomachaches, trouble sleeping, avoiding school, increased irritability or withdrawal, or changes in appetite or school performance.

If concerns continue, families don’t have to face them alone. Algoma Family Services provides support to children, youth and families throughout the Algoma District.
