East Algoma OPP – Suspect identified through security footage

On Thursday, August 27, 2026, at approximately 12:00 p.m., members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a theft complaint at a local general store in Hilton Beach.

The theft occurred sometime between 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, and 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. Security camera footage showed an individual concealing an item later identified as a 375 mL bottle of vodka (commonly referred to as a “mickey”) and leaving the store without paying for the item, valued at $17.45.

As a result of the investigation and review of the security footage, the individual was identified and arrested on August 28, 2026.

Jason NEWHOOK, 54 years old, of Orangeville, was charged with:

• Theft Under $5,000 – Shoplifting

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on October 1, 2026.
