East Algoma OPP – Charges Laid after Insecure load incident on Highway 17

On Thursday, August 27, 2026, members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol west of the Town of Spanish on Highway 17.

At approximately 11:00 a.m., police received a traffic complaint after a piece of plywood flew from a trailer being towed by a white pickup truck and struck a blue pickup truck travelling on the highway.

Police located the driver of the white pickup truck a short distance away as they were attempting to retrieve the plywood.

As a result of the investigation, the 73-year-old driver from Blind River was issued a Provincial Offence Notice and charged with: Insecure Load

Before hitting the road, ensure all cargo is properly loaded and secured. An insecure load can shift, fall, or become airborne, creating a serious hazard for other road users and increasing the risk of collisions, injuries, or fatalities.

Whether transporting building materials, furniture, appliances, or recreational equipment, take a few extra minutes to inspect and secure your load using appropriate tie-downs, straps, or tarps. If you’re unsure, stop and re-check it.

The East Algoma OPP reminds motorists that a properly secured load helps keep Ontario’s roads safe for everyone.
