Official Opposition NDP housing critic Jessica Bell (University – Rosedale) released the following statement in response to the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA’s) update on Ontario’s progress meeting the recommendations made by the Housing Affordability Task Force:
“The Conservatives have had six years to fix the housing crisis, and they’ve failed. It has never been more expensive to rent or own a home, and the government can’t even meet its only housing supply targets.
“Instead of implementing many of the Housing Affordability Task Force’s sensible recommendations, the Conservatives have wasted time opening up precious farmland and Greenbelt land to help their well-connected developer friends.
“An Ontario NDP government is committed to making housing affordable and spurring the construction of 1.5 million new homes to meet the needs of current and future Ontarians. It is time to end exclusionary zoning and legalize affordable housing options in all neighbourhoods, bring in strong rent control, and build hundreds of thousands of affordable and non-market homes.”
