East Algoma OPP – Additional Charges Laid in on-going sexual assault investigation

On March 15, 2022, the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attended a residence on Highway 17 in Sables-Spanish Township to arrest a person in relation to an on-going sexual assault investigation.

On February 21, 2022, police were conducting follow-up for the original historical sexual assault investigation which commenced on November 10, 2021. Additional information was disclosed to police and as a result, the 45-year-old was arrested again and charged with the following additional offences:

  • Sexual Assault on a Person Under 16 Years of Age (two counts), contrary to section 271 of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Invitation to Sexual Touching Under 16 years of age (two counts), contrary to section 152 of the CC
  • Sexual Interference (two counts), contrary to section 151 of the CC
  • Indecent Exposure to a Person Under 16 Years of Age (two counts), contrary to section 173(2) of the CC
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order – Other than to Attend Court (two counts), contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the CC

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River on March 16, 2022, and was remanded into custody.
