Everyone has a story to tell and sometimes the best stories come from the very lives we live.
The Northwestern Ontario Writer’s Workshop (NOWW) is pleased to offer help writers of all skill levels tap into personal stories and will be hosting a workshop focused on memoir writing facilitated by award- winning author and newspaper columnist, Joe Fiorito.
“The point of any writing, regardless of the form, is to show who we are, where we are, and how we are; but because there are only a few different kinds of story, each one of them depends for its singularity on an underpinning of close observation,” Fiorito said.
Fiorito, who was born and raised in Thunder Bay, has led a 36-year long career as a journalist and columnist, working for the CBC and writing for The Montreal Gazette, The Globe and Mail, The National Post, and The Toronto Star. He has published several collections of columns, which earned him the National Newspaper Award for Columns in 1995.
In 2002, Fiorito published his first novel, The Song Beneath the Ice, which won the 2003 Toronto Book Award. He has also published several works of non-fiction, including Union Station and Rust is a Form of Fire, and his most recent work, was just published.
Fiorito’s memoir, The Closer We are to Dying, was published in 1999 and explores the life of his father’s growing up and starting a family in Fort William in the 1950s.
According to Fiorito, strong memoir writing comes down to the details, no matter how small. “That’s what distinguishes one work from another, and it is what will make your own memoir stand out.” He added, “As for observation, and for what passes as truth, I remind you that if a dozen people see a thing, you will get a dozen versions of what happened; this is one of the hard realities of the memoir, and it is just one of the many things we will discuss in the workshop.”
NOWW past president, Jane Crossman, has attended workshops led by Fiorito and said, “Joe’s workshops are terrific. I highly recommend those that want to know more about memoir writing attend.”
The Memoir Writing Workshop will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mary J.L Black Library. Space is limited and registration is required. Sorry, no walk-ins. For more information and to register, visit https://www.nowwwriters.ca/
