Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon schools will celebrate Franco-Ontarian Day in meaningful ways on Friday, September 25. Students, families and staff will take part in numerous activities at school or in the community to honour the vitality of the Franco-Ontarian community. Here is an overview of the cultural and identity-building activities planned in CSC Nouvelon schools. Members of the media are invited to attend.
In Chapleau, Kindergarten to grade 6 students of École Sacré-Coeur and grade 7 to 12 students of École secondaire catholique Trillium will celebrate the occasion with Centre culturel Louis Hémon and the Alliance des francophones engagés de Chapleau. At 1:45 p.m., students will take part in a noisemaking parade from their respective schools to the Rotary Pavillion to attend the Franco-Ontarian flag-raising ceremony with their community.
For the École Saint-Joseph (Blind River) school community, the Franco-Ontarian Day celebrations will begin in the school yard at 10 a.m.
Grade 9 to 12 students at Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury) will begin the day at 8:30 a.m. with a Franco-Ontarian flag-raising ceremony. In addition, a group of students will take part in an enriching leadership and Francophone engagement experience at the University of Sudbury beginning at 9:30 a.m. Organized by the ACFO du Grand Sudbury and the University of Sudbury, the event will conclude with a community Franco-Ontarian flag-raising ceremony at 11 a.m.
From 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., students from Grades 5 to 8 at École Ste-Marie (Azilda), École Alliance St-Joseph (Chelmsford) and École St-Étienne (Dowling) will be joining the grade 9 to 12 students at École secondaire catholique Champlain (Chelmsford) for the Franco-Requins Festival. The festival will conclude with a Franco-Ontarian flag-raising ceremony at 12-noon.
In Val Thérèse, École catholique Notre-Place students from Kindergarten to grade 8 will gather enthusiastically outside the school to take part in a celebratory noisemaking parade beginning at 9:20 a.m. to showcase their Francophone identity and community spirit.
At 11 a.m., École secondaire catholique l’Horizon (Val Caron) Special Education students and staff will take part in a Franco-Ontarian flag-raising ceremony with Community Living Greater Sudbury in Blezard Valley.
At École Notre-Dame-du-Sault (Sault Ste. Marie), the elementary students and staff will make their way to the Civic Centre at 11 a.m. to attend the community activities organized by the Centre francophone de Sault-Ste-Marie. Afterwards, Notre-Dame-du-Sault families can join in the celebration during a school picnic at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion. Meanwhile, secondary school students will take part in their own flag-raising ceremony and identity-building activities at school prepared by the Student Parliament.
At École St-Dominique (Sudbury), the school community will take part in various identity-building activities throughout the day. At 12-noon, students and staff will gather in the school gymnasium for a presentation by the grade 7 students on the history and the importance of the Franco-Ontarian flag. The school choir will then perform a variety of Francophone songs, including Rodney Meilleur’s “Franco-O”.
École catholique Félix-Ricard (Sudbury) students and staff will show off their Franco-Ontarian pride during a noisemaking parade from 1:30 to 2 p.m.
Starting at 2 p.m. Kindergarten to grade 8 students of École St-Denis (Sudbury) will parade in the schoolyard or the neighbourhood to showcase their green and white clothing with pride.
The school community of École Notre-Dame de la Merci (Coniston) will proudly display their Franco-Ontarian spirit during a noisemaking parade which will begin at 2 p.m.
Dressed in green and white clothing, the students of École St-Joseph (Sudbury) will move to the rhythm of their favourite French-language songs during a dance party from 2 to 2:30 p.m.
