Sudbury OPP – Fatal Collision with Moose closes Hwy 17 for 8 hours

One person is deceased following a single-vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Sudbury.

On Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at approximately 9:15 p.m., members of the Nipissing West (Sudbury) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision involving a passenger vehicle and a moose on Highway 17, west of the Highway 144 junction.

The 20-year-old driver from Sudbury was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) Team assisted with the investigation.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 17 were closed for approximately eight hours while police examined the scene. The highway has since reopened.
