East Algoma OPP – Intimate Partner Violence Results in Criminal Charges

On Tuesday, September 14, 2026, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated a matter involving intimate partners within the territory of Mississauga First Nation (north of Iron Bridge).

As a result of the investigation, OPP learned that the involved suspect had committed criminal acts against their partner.

With the assistance from the OPP’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) a 39-year-old from Blind River was arrested on the morning of Friday, September 18, 2026, and was charged under the Criminal Code with the following offences:

• Utter threats – cause death or bodily harm – spousal
• Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose – three counts
• Unauthorized possession of weapon -three counts
• Possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to Probation Order – fourteen counts
• Possession of a Schedule III substance
• Possession of a Schedule I substance – cocaine – four counts
• Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking – cocaine

The accused was processed and held for a bail hearing with a later court date scheduled at the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake.

“Intimate partner violence is not limited to physical assaults. It can involve threats, intimidation, coercive control, weapons, and other behaviours that place victims at significant risk. The presence of weapons and drugs in these situations can further increase concerns for victim safety. The OPP takes these incidents seriously and will continue to work with community partners to protect victims, investigate offences thoroughly, and connect those impacted with available support services.” explained Acting Staff Sergeant Andre Chenier – Operations Manager
