Cement truck wedged under train bridge on Highway 538.
On Thursday, August 13, 2026, at approximately 1:45 p.m., members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a cement truck that became lodged beneath the railway bridge on Highway 538 near Channelview Road in Algoma Mills.
The railway company, the Ministry of Labour, and a highway contractor attended the scene and assisted with the investigation.
There were no reported injuries. The railway company was notified, and a train stop order was put into effect. Highway 538 was closed in both directions for approximately 11.5 hours while the cement truck was removed and the bridge was inspected. The highway was reopened at approximately 12:30 a.m. on August 14, 2026.
As result of the investigation, the 67-year-old driver from Elliot Lake was charged under the Highway Traffic Act with Carless driving.
