Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is our Crime Prevention message of the day. Property crime is often a crime of opportunity. The CPTED theory reduces the opportunity for property crime to occur.
- Maintain your property to keep clear line of sight from inside your home or business, trimming trees, shrubs and plants is an effective way of increasing visibility
- When away from your home, have a friend or family member collect your mail, cut your grass and/or shovel your driveway to give the appearance someone is home
- Install quality locks on your home, garage and shed and keep them locked at all times
- Store property, such as bicycles, out of sight in a locked area where people can’t easily access it
- Make sure your property is well lit, consider motion activated lights
- Consider installing an alarm system and/or video surveillance
By following these CPTED principles, you will increase the security of your property and reduce the opportunity for property crime to occur.
