Members of the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with the Coleman Fire Department and the Temiskaming District Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a float plane crash on October 13, 2018 shortly after 10:30 a.m.
The incident occurred in the north end of Gillies Lake (also known as Mud Lake), in Coleman Township, Ontario. The 70-year-old male pilot from Cobalt, Ontario was attempting to take off in his aircraft when the plane experienced mechanical problems. The pilot directed the plane towards the lake and landed abruptly causing damage to the plane.
The pilot and the two passengers were not injured during the incident. The parties were rescued by a civilian boater and the plane was towed to the nearby docks.
The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) and the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) have been notified and are assisting with this investigation.
