Labour Day statement from Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath,
“Labour Day is an important day for Ontarians to celebrate the protections and rights that generations of workers and unions have fought hard to secure over the years. Today, we celebrate our sisters and brothers who fought to ensure that all workers in Ontario could enjoy the gains made through better working conditions, stronger protections, and the updated laws they need to build a great life, as well as the occupational health and safety they need to come home safe every day.
Today, all of Ontario’s workers are facing the threat of a premier that wants to drag Ontario backwards, including ripping off workers by rolling back minimum wage gains, and promising to ‘leave no stone unturned’ when it comes to privatization. Doug Ford’s cutting, privatizing and deregulating agenda threatens the jobs, services and working conditions that people count on. Ontarians deserve better, and it doesn’t have to be this way. Working together, in solidarity, new gains are possible.
The NDP will fight for a $15 minimum wage. We’ll keep pushing for benefits for all, including prescription and dental coverage. And we’ll work to make sure Ontario moves forward, not backward, when it comes to protecting all workers.
New Democrats are proud to join in labour day celebrations across the province – to celebrate how far we’ve come, and plan the gains still to be made.”
