On Thursday, August 20, 2026, at approximately 12:30 a.m., members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 17 in Algoma Mills.
Police observed a westbound black vehicle travelling more than 120 km/h in a posted 70 km/h zone near Lauzon Village Road and initiated a traffic stop.
The investigation determined the vehicle was displaying licence plates not authorized for the vehicle and was being operated without valid motor vehicle insurance.
The vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for 14 days.
A 24-year-old from Winnipeg, MB was charged under the Highway Traffic Act and the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act with:
- Drive motor vehicle-perform stunt-excessive speed
- Drive motor vehicle, no plates
- Owner operate a motor vehicle without insurance
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice – Provincial Offences in Blind River on November 17, 2026.
