Statement from WLON Chief & Council on the Parole decision regarding Brayden Bushby

Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation stands in solidarity with Barbara Kentner’s family in expressing profound outrage and disbelief at the Parole Board of Canada’s decision to grant full parole to Brayden Bushby. This decision is not only appalling—it is a painful reminder of the deep and persistent discrimination that continues to infect Canada’s justice system.

Barbara Kentner’s death was not an isolated tragedy; it was a reflection of the racism and violence Indigenous people endure daily. The granting of full parole to her attacker, less than two years into his sentence, sends a devastating message that Indigenous lives are treated as expendable. It undermines every principle of justice, accountability, and deterrence that the court sought to uphold.

Our community is in disbelief as we grieve with Barbara’s family and with all those who have been retraumatized by this decision. WLON calls upon the federal government and the Parole Board of Canada to confront the systemic bias that continues to deny Indigenous victims and families meaningful justice.

The release of Brayden Bushby is a miscarriage of justice.

We reaffirm our commitment to stand with our Treaty partners and Indigenous Nations across Canada to demand a justice system that values our lives, respects our laws, and protects our people. Barbara Kentner’s memory will not be forgotten, and her name will continue to guide our fight for truth and accountability.
