Calling aspiring actors of all ages! The Sault Theatre Workshop and Shot in the Dark are teaming up to co-produce our city’s next Broadway musical. Based on the classic Roald Dahl book and film of the same name, Matilda features catchy songs, memorable characters and a classic story about growing up. It has been called “the standout musical of the decade.”
The production team is looking for actors, singers and dancers of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels. “I’m looking for enthusiasm and reliability, not a resume,” director Anthony Aceti said regarding casting the show. “It’s a marvellous show and very fun to work on. Actors who have high energy, who don’t mind trying something new, will love rehearsing this play and creating the world of Matilda. ”
Set largely in a British primary school, there are many roles available for children and teenagers. The adult roles in Matilda are diverse and require that each actor play multiple characters.
Auditions for children and youth will be held 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11th. Adults are asked to attend at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 12th. Thursday, June 13th at 6:00 p.m. is the auditions for the leading roles of Matilda, Ms. Honey, Mr. & Mrs. Wormwood, and Miss Agatha Trunchbull. All auditions will be held at 121 Pittsburgh Ave., Sault Theatre Workshop’s home base.
“If you’re not sure what you would like to try out for, come out on Tuesday or Wednesday, based on your age,” Aceti said. “Given the timing of the casting call, we want everyone to know that rehearsals won’t affect your summer.”
Rehearsals will begin in September. Some actors may be asked, once cast, if they are able to commit a few hours of their summer vacation to learn the music and dialogue, though that is not a requirement.
To prepare for the audition, all actors should be ready to present a short excerpt of a song that they feel shows off their vocal ability. 16-bars of music will suffice (ie. a verse or a chorus). Additionally, those attending auditions will be taught a song from the show, given some script work to do and be asked to participate in some warm-up theatre games.
For those who are interested in participating behind-the-scenes, you are asked to attend one of the audition dates and meet the production team. More information will be available at the auditions for those interested in crew responsibilities.
Matilda the Musical will be produced at the Workshop in the fall, running from Wednesday, October 23rd to Sunday, October 27th, including two matinees.
