News Tidbits – Today is International Women’s Day. It was first celebrated in 1945, 74 years ago.

It has been 5 years since Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 deviated from its planned route after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, and then 40 minutes later, radar contact was lost somewhere over the Indian Ocean. It has not been found. Since then work has been underway to implement a way to track aircraft since nearly 75% of the Earth is not covered by radar. The 2016 Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System (GADSS) – Concept of Operations (CONOPS), is expected to be implemented date by January 2021, about two years from now.

In more aviation news – A women’s air racing event “Air Race Classic” will be stopping in Sault Ste. Marie from June 18-21. The race begins in Jackson, Tenn. and ends in Welland, Ont., will cover more than 4,000 kilometres with stops along the way as the race must be flown during daylight hours.

Buffy Sainte-Marie will be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame at the SOCAN Awards in Toronto on April 1.
